About Year 10

Welcome to Year 10 at Loxford School

Year 10 Motto:  Don’t Let Anyone Steal Your Dream

Year 10 is the formal starting point for Loxford pupils to work towards achieving GCSE and/or BTEC
qualifications.  Our year 10 students are expected to work hard to achieve outstanding grades.

Loxford School expects all students to demonstrate positive attitudes to work and high standards of behaviour, which display a respect for other people.  Every student must follow the school Code of Conduct and must be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.  This is closely monitored and reinforced by Mrs Newsam and Mr Forster, the Achievement Team Leaders for Year 10, Ms Siequien, representing the Year Care Team, and the dedicated tutor team.  We are supported in our work by all the subject teachers, teachers from the AEN and EAL departments and all other staff within the school.  Students’ who display outstanding work and effort are rewarded with certificates, positive letters home and curriculum linked visits.  Sanctions are used when students do not meet our high standards and parents are asked to support us in the application of these sanctions.  Students are encouraged to have a say in the life of the school: each tutor group sends representatives to the year council meetings and selected students take part in Student Voice meetings to discuss various aspects of school life.  We have 48 monitors who play for the role of leaders within the Year group. They have numerous duties in order to support the school’s ethos.

Final Year 11 GCSE exams may seem a long way away. Indeed your sons and daughters will follow a new linear assessment schedule which means the majority of their GCSE exams will take place in July of Year 11.  However this means it is all the more important that students remain diligent and committed throughout this year.  It makes a drastic change in the way in which our students are assessed but with the full support of parents and carers alike we will strive to ensure your child receives the best grades possible.

The vision of the Year 10 team is to encourage all students to exceed their potential with the full support of the year team and their parents.  A positive relationship with home is essential if the students are to achieve their potential.  Success does not happen by working in isolation – we all need to help and support the most important person, which of course is the student.

In order to achieve this goal, students must show an eagerness for learning.  Year 10 students will show that they enjoy and seek learning through the choices they make.  Students must demonstrate that they enjoy learning through outstanding attendance and punctuality, though behaviour which allows for learning to take place and through the completion of work in class and at home to the best of their ability.

Year 10 students must now take full ownership of their learning and adopt a no-excuses policy.  They need to make effective use of their diaries to record homework and to monitor their own attendance and punctuality.  Parents and tutors must support this by checking the diary weekly and using it as a communication tool which links the efforts of home and school.

The school will facilitate extended opportunities to assist students in their effort to be their best.  AEN, EAL and G&T teams within the school will offer students the support needed to achieve and exceed their targets.  Extra-curricular activities will include lunchtime and after-school academic clubs whilst sporting clubs will provide students with the chance to develop socially in areas outside of their academic subjects.

After school and during the school holidays, student will be given the opportunity to attend useful revision classes leading up to their GCSE examinations.  We will continue to push our students to make outstanding progress and urge our Year 10 students to continue to aim high and achieve their full potential.

Thank you in anticipation of your continued support and I look forward to an extremely successful year.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at the school.
