About Modern Foreign Languages

As a Specialist Language College, our focus here in Loxford School is to develop the ability of our students to communicate successfully and effectively in the target language. We put also great emphasis in independent learning and achieving excellence; therefore, it is the ability to express themselves linguistically, resorting to different ways, which will be assessed in all parts of their course and eventually at GCSE level and AS and A2 level.

Through our specialism status, Loxford is committed to cooperate with the local community and businesses as well as other secondary and primary schools. We are involved in the Linked up National Scheme for Languages, which aims to ensure a smooth transition between key stages, KS2 -KS3, and to develop linguistic independence and confidence for all learners.

The MFL department celebrated European Day of Languages beginning with an assembly for Yea 7 students.  In this assembly teachers shared with students the importance of learning languages not only for university but also with regards to career and personal live.  
In lessons, students experienced a variety of languages including German, Italian, Latin, Aztec and Creole to name a few.
The MFL department also hosted activities throughout the week from aerobics in French to films in a variety of foreign languages and songs in Spanish.
The week was met with enthusiasm by students and teachers alike.


Outside the classroom

THE FRENCH TRIP

The Modern Languages Department organises an annual day-trip to Boulogne (France) for students in Year 7. The students are selected on a “first come, first served” basis. Students are withdrawn from the trip if it is felt that their presence would be detrimental to the success of the trip.
It is a cultural experience, as well as an opportunity for students to reinforce and use their linguistic skills. Throughout the trip, students have the opportunity to practise their language skills with each other, staff and native speakers.
They are encouraged to do this through a fantastic programme of activities, which include:


• Transactions at the supermarket
• Visit to a sweet-making factory  
• Visit to the old town
• Visit to the aquarium
 picnic on the beach (weather permitting)
and a shopping session in one of the biggest shopping centres in France.





THE SPANISH TRIP


The Modern Languages Department has organised a seven-day trip to Spain for students in years 8 and 9. The students are selected on a “first come, first served” basis with subsidised places available for those whose parents are on income support. This is discussed with the Deputy Head in charge of trips. The Modern Languages Department, Head of Year and Mr Morgan vet the list of applicants. Students are withdrawn from the trip if it is felt that their presence would be detrimental to the success of the trip.
It is a cultural experience, as well as an opportunity for students to develop their linguistic skills. Throughout the trip, students have the opportunity to practise their language skills with each other, staff and native speakers.
They are encouraged to do this though activities planned, which include:

• Transactions at the market
• Project book
• Interview with a native speaker
• Trips to the towns of Sevilla, Nerja, Granada
• Use of public transport
• Visit to a museum
• Visit to a fiesta
• Visit to las cuevas de Nerja
• Dolphin safari
• Visit to the Alhambra Palace
• Visit to the interactive science museum

Before the trip, students are encouraged to find out more about the areas to be visited by writing to various tourist offices in Andalucia. We are currently trying to establish a correspondence scheme using email with a school in the area. We hope to develop a strong relationship with our link school in order for students to improve their communicative skills and to develop their cultural awareness.

AIMS

• To encourage and develop the ability to use the target language effectively for communication.
• Active learning with both students and teachers in roles, acting out real life situations relevant to both ages and interests of students.
• Involving language genuinely needed to perform any task; offering an insight into the culture and civilisation of the foreign language countries.
• To provide enjoyment and to stimulate their awareness of languages.
• To encourage positive attitudes to foreigners and foreign languages as well as respect and understanding of foreign culture and civilisation to counteract prejudice.
• To enable learners to communicate effectively in everyday situations involving either foreign visitors in this country or themselves visiting a foreign country.
• To make a provision for trips abroad in the early stages of learning.
• To provide students with enough opportunities to experience success, enjoyment and feeling of acquiring a sound and satisfactory linguistic knowledge.


LINGUISTIC OBJECTIVES

Our intention is to provide always carefully structured activities and well chosen authentic material designed for both foundation and higher level of achievement in all Attainment Targets. We aim to offer a balanced variety of work and material allowing students to move with enthusiasm from comprehension to creation of their own utterances and written work in the target language. Thus, in our three parts lessons, we aim to cater for all the abilities through the planning of activities which are aimed to suit students’ different learning styles and develop the four auricular skills.

Our KS3, 4 & 5 Schemes of Work, which are regularly reviewed, are designed to include curricular and cross-curricular developments, in order to improve students’ language-learning skills and to provide them with strategies which aim to boost their performance. Literacy and Numeracy, as well as PSCHE orientations, are fundamental parts of our Schemes of Work  too, so are regular activities developing skills strategies on how to improve listening and reading, starters requiring students to apply logic and make connections, activities to develop anticipation skills in exam contexts and ongoing opportunities for pair work and regular peer assessment.

In addition to French and Spanish taught during the school day, here in Loxford High we also offer a range of community languages, Urdu, Pungiabi, Bengali, Italian, Arabic, German and Portuguese which are taught in twilight sessions. These lessons are taught by well experienced teachers and prove to be very popular.

In order to support even further the pupils’ learning, the following extra-curricular activities are offered in our Department:
Homework club: you can get help with your MFL homework at the homework club at lunch times.

SAM learning: all students at key stage 4 are giving a password to an online revision centre called SAM learning. Students who regularly use SAM learning generally see an improvement in their GCSE grade.

Fronter: KS3 & 4 students benefit from the use of this fantastic and exciting Managed Learning Environment, an online school building with different rooms inside. Students can only access Fronter using their personal username and password and are only allowed to see rooms they have been made a member of. Fronter is a secure web space where students can:
 
•     view examples of work
•     find links to approved websites
•     find more information on what they are learning about at school
•     upload and save pieces of work (at school and at home - providing they have internet access)
•     join in with relevant online discussions
•     complete online activities
•     receive news and reminders
 
Spanish Club: open to all students of key stage three (whether you study Spanish or French) on Wednesday lunch time at 1245. Come and have fun and improve your Spanish.

French club: open to all students of key stage three (even if you don’t study French) on Friday lunch time at 1245. A variety of activities happen at the club designed to help you improve your French.

Speaking club: this is open to students of year eleven and helps them prepare for their final speaking exam.
We also are very fortunate to have a French and Spanish language assistant whose presence brings vibrance and culture  to the classroom.
