What you will learn in KS3
EAL teachers work in partnership with subject teachers to support EAL learners in years 7, 8 and 9 in the mainstream classroom. EAL teachers meet regularly with subject specialists in all departments offering guidance in differentiating materials in order to maximise the development of literacy skills in any given group of students. In some classes teachers and bilingual assistants offer in-class support.
Students in the early stages of learning English are withdrawn three times a week to participate in a ‘Beginners’ class, the department is well resourced with a variety of language games, bilingual texts and picture dictionaries.
What you will learn in KS4
At Key Stage 4 we offer EAL as an Option subject which gives the students an opportunity to study for the iGCSE in English as a second language. This option also concentrates on building and developing higher language skills which will help the students to access and achieve across the curriculum.
This Option therefore is particularly helpful for students who have started learning English at a later stage in their secondary education. The course is designed to support the GCSE English and English Literature curriculum so that the students increase their chances of achieving good grades in these subjects.
